Meet the Teacher

In her Art & Science Fusion program, Mary Kaltenbach melds her talents as an artist/art educator with her love of the natural world, teaching in a school setting with an age group she adores.

Ms. Mary, as she is affectionately known to the children, brings to the program a broad background in art.

Since 1981, she has co-owned ArtWorks and ArtStudio, specializing in art education, production and the showing of private and public works of art. Co-owner Stephen Kaltenbach is her partner in life and work. Stephen supports Mary with behind-the-scenes encouragement, advice and a winning team effort. Together they have two adult children, Daniel and Sarah Kate.

For the past 20 years, Ms. Mary has taught art classes at:

  • Crocker Art Museum, Sacramento

  • St. James School, Davis

  • Pence Gallery, Davis

  • Academy of Arts, Sacramento

  • ArtStudio, Davis

  • Montessori Schools, Davis

She served on the Board of Directors of the nonprofit YoloArts, where she promoted and supported art education in Yolo County. She also co-chaired YoloArt’s annual fund-raiser, Artistic Sensations for several years.

For many years, she worked with young art students who participated in Yolo NAMI’s annual sunflower project. Their sunflower art was shown at the Davis Art Center and other venues, helping raise funds for NAMI’s mental illness family programs. As she does now, Ms. Mary emphasized the connection between artistic expression and nature, along with a message about well-being.

Ms. Mary holds a bachelor’s degree from California State University, Sacramento, and a master’s degree in counseling from San Diego State University. Throughout her early career in counseling, she nurtured her own creative spirit, following her passions until Art & Science Fusion was born.

I am passionate about helping children express themselves through art in an environment that is both engaging and supportive. I believe that we are all gifted with a creative spirit that longs to be expressed through art, literature, dance, music, and more.
